Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Nissan Titan have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The Nissan Titan has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Titan and the Hummer EV Pickup have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive, daytime running lights and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and its standard front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Titan the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 206 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Hummer EV Pickup has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The Titan comes with a full 5-year/100,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Hummer EV Pickup’s 3-year basic warranty expires 2 years or 64000 miles sooner.

The Titan’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Hummer EV Pickup’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Titan second among large light duty pickups in their 2023 Initial Quality Study. The Hummer EV Pickup isn’t in the top three in its category.

Tires and Wheels

The Titan has a standard full size spare so a flat doesn’t interrupt your work or a trip. A full size spare costs extra on the Hummer EV Pickup. Without the option you must depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Titan’s wheelbase is 4.2 inches longer than on the Hummer EV Pickup (139.8 inches vs. 135.6 inches).

Chassis

The Nissan Titan may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 3100 to 3500 pounds less than the GMC Hummer EV Pickup.

The Titan is 6.6 inches narrower on average than the Hummer EV Pickup, making the Titan easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

Passenger Space

The Titan has standard seating for 6 passengers; the Hummer EV Pickup can only carry 5.

Cargo Capacity

The Titan Crew Cab has a much larger cargo box than the Hummer EV Regular Cab shortbed (50.7 vs. 36.7 cubic feet).

The Hummer EV Pickup’s spare tire is stored in the cargo area, where it diminishes the useable cargo capacity and interferes with loading and unloading. The Titan’s spare is out of the way underneath.

The Titan has stake post holes, to allow the containment of tall, light loads. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer stake post holes.

Payload and Towing

The Titan’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Hummer EV Pickup’s (9130 vs. 7500 pounds).

The Titan Crew Cab 4x4 has a much higher standard payload capacity than the Hummer EV Pickup (1650 vs. 1300 lbs.).

The Titan has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the Hummer EV Pickup (1710 vs. 1300 lbs.).

Servicing Ease

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the Titan to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes, spark plug replacement, air filter replacement, tire rotation, radiator flush, brake pad replacement, brake fluid replacement, and transmission fluid replacement, based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. GMC doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Hummer EV Pickup.

Ergonomics

The Titan’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Hummer EV Pickup’s power windows’ switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

If the front windows are left open on the Titan the driver can close them at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Hummer EV Pickup can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Model Availability

The Nissan Titan comes in extended cab and crew cab bodystyles; the GMC Hummer EV Pickup isn’t available as an extended cab.

The Titan is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Titan first among large light duty pickups in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Hummer EV Pickup isn’t in the top three.

Motor Trend selected the Titan as their 2017 Truck of the Year. The Hummer EV Pickup has never been chosen.

The Nissan Titan outsold the GMC Hummer EV Pickup by almost 18 to one during 2022.
